When is the Right Time to Open Your Swimming Pool?

With many parts of the country still experiencing cold weather and snow, it might seem like a strange time to think about opening your pool. Many pool owners debate the optimal time to open their pool. Often, the conclusion is that, if the water isn’t warm enough for swimming, then it’s okay to wait. Not true.

Spring and its warmer temperatures can sneak up on you, wreaking havoc on your pool by promoting algae growth. This can be especially problematic if you use a mesh pool cover, as the water will get plenty of sunlight. It is often better to prepare for swim season earlier rather than later.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

When deciding whether it’s the right time to open your pool, keep the following things in mind:

Expenses: Opening a pool too late can cause the need for extra cleaning and maintenance before use. Consider the cost of the additional chemicals to properly clean and prepare your pool.

Aesthetic: Keeping your pool covered can prevent your yard and landscaping from looking their best. Think about how much better it would look to have a clean, open pool.

Use: Whether your pool is heated or non-heated, it is ideal for opening it at least three weeks before you intend to use it. Your water must be clean and clear before swimming.

Pool/ Spa Opening Procedure

  • Before the Rave Pool's arrival, the Homeowner needs to add water to the pool to the middle of the skimmer mouth or the middle of the tile. The reasoning is that your system cannot run without adequate water levels.
  • Remove the Safety Cover. We will leave the cover out to dry (may be across multiple visits) and store the Pool Cover (please let your tech know where you prefer)
  • Reconnect all equipment removed at closing
  • Activate all equipment for the pool and/or spa
  • Add chemicals to the pool to begin to abate algae and bacteria growth.
  • 3 – 5 days after the initial visit, we will return to perform the First Vacuum, provided the pool is clear enough to see the bottom. If not, we will add the necessary chemicals and return them.
  • Brush and clean the pool
Install Pump, check the pressure, check equipment, lights
  • Test Heater
  • Install skimmer baskets and return eyeballs
  • Blow the leaves in and around the pool

When the pool is clear, a First Vacuum will be performed. We will continue to return until all algae and debris fall to the bottom, and we can completely clean the pool to be ready to swim. The initial First and Second vacuum are included in the Opening. Further visits require a fee for the extra vacuums.

Please allow the Filtration System to run NO LESS THAN 24 hours a day until the pool clears. We will send you an email when your pool is ready to use.
